Você já reparou na quantidade de expressões em inglês que fazem alusão à comida? 

O interessante é que a tradução literal de algumas delas não fazem o menor sentido. Por isso é que elas são consideradas idioms, ou seja, expressões idiomáticas. Elas possuem um significado completamente diferente de sua tradução pura e simples. Por isso, cuidado ao traduzí-las ao pé da letra!

The apple of someone's eye

Significado: Algo ou alguém extremamente precioso e que exige cuidado e atenção permanentes, o "queridinho(a)",  "menina dos olhos"

Exemplo:The youngest daughter is the apple of her dad's eyes.

Not worth his salt

Significado: "Não vale o que come", não prestar para nada; não ser digno; não valer nada, inútil.

Exemplo: "Why is that guy still working here? You know he isn't worth his salt!

Salad days

Significado: "Quando era ingênuo e inexperiente"

Exemplo: "Although that vow was made in my salad days, when I was green in judgement, I do not regret nor retract one word of it."

Sowing your wild oats

Significado: Refere-se a um período da vida dos jovens em que eles têm várias experiências sexuais.

Exemplo: He'd spent his twenties sowing his wild oats but felt that it was time to settle down

Upper crust

Significado: O nível mais alto da sociedade, classe alta.

Exemplo: Jane speaks like that because she pretends to be from the upper crust, but her father was a miner. James is from the upper crust, but he is penniles

Piece of cake

Significado: "Moleza", baba; algo muito fácil, que não causa nenhuma dificuldade ou transtorno.
Exemplo: That test was a piece of cake!

Use your bean

Significado: "Use sua cabeça"

Exemplo: The test is not so hard, you just have to use your bean!

Spill the beans

Significado: Estragar a supresa

Exemplo: Tonight we're throwing Denise a surprise birthday party! Please, don't spill the beans!

Go bananas!

Significado: Ir à loucura; ficar maluco, doido, perder o controle.

Exemplo: Her parents go bananas every time she throws a party.

Couch Potato

Significado: Alguém preguiçoso, sedentário, que adora ficar no sofá assistindo à TV.

Exemplo: He's definitely a couch potato. He never goes out to practice sports.

Wake up and smell the coffee!

Significado: Acorda pra vida!

Exemplo: Things have changed around here, wake up and smell the coffee!

Not my cup of tea

Significado: Não é a minha praia.

Exemplo: You three visit the museum without me. Looking at fussy old paintings is not my cup of tea. 

A storm in a teacup

Significado: Superestimar uma situação pequena e transformá-la em algo grande; "tempestade num copo d'água"

Exemplo:  I think it's all a storm in a teacup - there's probably no danger to public health at all.

Fruitcake

Significado: Maluco

Exemplo: People will think you're a fruitcake if you continue acting like this.

Bite the hand that feeds

Significado: Ser ingrato, "Cuspir no prato que comeu"

Exemplo: Leaving the company after they've spent three years training you up - it's a bit like biting the hand that feeds you.

Born with a silver spoon in one's mouth

Significado: Ter origem rica, "ser nascido em berço de ouro".

Exemplo: James doesn't know anything about working for a living; he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. 

Cry over the spilled milk

Significado:  Reclamar sobre algo que já aconteceu e que não há mais nada que possa ser feito.

Exemplo: He is always crying over spilled milk. He cannot accept reality.

Rotten apple

Significado: Alguém que pode influenciar os outros com seu mau comportamento, "laranja podre".

Exemplo: There always is a rotten apple to spoil it for the rest of us.

Sell like hot cakes

Significado:  Vender muito, "vender como água".

Exemplo: The fancy new cars were selling like hotcakes.

That's the way the cookie crumbles

Significado:  É assim que as coisas são; é a vida; "é assim que a banda toca".

Exemplo: I can't believe they chose Sam for the job and not me. Ah well, that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Cut the mustard

Significado:  Ser bem sucedido

Exemplo: If she can't cut the mustard, we'll have to find someone else to do the job.

Finger linckin' good

Significado: Muito gostoso, delicioso, "de lamber os beiços".

Exemplo: The cake is finger lickin' good!

Shut your pie hole!

Significado:  Cala a boca!, "Feche sua matraca!"

Exemplo: Can you please shut your pie hole? I'm trying to watch the movie!

Eat the humble pie

Significado:  Seja humilde; "calçar as sandálias da humildade"

Exemplo: I think I'm right, but if I'm wrong, I'll eat humble pie.

One for the road

Significado:  A última dose antes de ir embora; "saideira"

Exemplo: Let's have one for the road.

Say cheese!

Significado:  Usado para fazer as pessoas sorrirem quando são fotografadas, "diga "xis"!

Exemplo: Ok, let's take a picture, everybody say cheese!

Use your noodle!

Significado:  Use a cabeça!

Exemplo: Yes, she sure knows how to use her noodle.

(Have a) bun in the oven

Significado:  Estar grávida.

Exemplo: She has a bun in the oven! It's a boy!

Smell fishy

Significado:  Tem algo errado; "algo não cheira bem"

Exemplo: Barlowe squinted a bit. Something smells fishy here, he thought. It was too good to be true.

Apples and oranges

Significado:  "Uma coisa não tem nada a ver com a outra"

Exemplo: Talking about her current book and her previous bestseller is like comparing apples and oranges.

Big cheese

Significado:  "O f*dão", o "manda-chuva".

Exemplo: Apparently her father is a big cheese in one of the major banks.
